Our mission is to support the study and conservation of wild plants, which we do through:
Providing a forum for botanists to communicate and exchange ideas through meetings, conferences, publications and electronic media
Training the next generation of botanists through courses, field meetings, grants and educational materials
Supporting research and study of plants in Britain and Ireland through our network of recorders, the work of our staff, access to data, and through grants
Working with people in other organisations and other countries to encourage communication and collaboration in pursuit of shared objectives.
Changes to the BSBI
BSBI has been making some structural improvements and, as part of the legal and financial processes involved, our name will be changing. On 24 November 2012, the members of the Botanical Society of the British Isles voted to approve the formation of a company limited by guarantee, the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, to take over its assets and activities following its incorporation and registration as a charity with the Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. The company was incorporated on 3 June 2013 and on 18 July 2013 was registered as a charity in England and Wales by the Charity Commission.
The change of name does not indicate any change in the society’s aims: we remain the leading botanical society promoting the study, understanding and enjoyment of wild plants in Britain and Ireland.
Whilst the BSBI completes this transfer, either name may be used in general communications. However, until this process is complete, the name Botanical Society of the British Isles should be used for all formal and legal purposes.
Botanical Society of the British Isles (known as BSBI) is a charity registered in England and Wales (212560) and in Scotland (SC038675). Registered address: Botanical Society of the British Isles, Botany Department, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 5BD.
Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (also known as BSBI) is a charity registered in England and Wales (1152954). Registered Office: Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, 57 Walton Road, Shirehampton, Bristol, BS11 9TA.
Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland has licensed the use of its name and logo to the Botanical Society of the British Isles
